NLP – The communication model

In this post we’re going to take a look at the communication model to help explain the concept  “The Map is Not the Territory.”  This post will help explain how you create your experiences, and how you can utilize this information to create the life you want

 Why is it important to understand the communication model?

Because without it, you’ll never realize the part you’re playing in creating your reality. That is, there’s an event, and there’s your external reaction to it. We never actually realize, that there’s an internal process which you can change to create different results in your life.

Therefore, without this knowledge you’re going to end up being a victim in the world. You’re going to be frustrated. You’re going to waste a lot of time trying to get the results you want without ever being able to achieve them, and most importantly, you’ll never actually realize that you can actually change.

The Map Is Not the Territory – what does this actually mean?

This can be described as the internal process that happens between an event in the outside world, and your reaction to it. Bill Harris, the creator of Centerpointe, describes this process as your internal map of reality. That is, how you create a model for the world; that you filter all the information from the outside world through. As the image shows, we have the inputs coming from the outside world that come through a filtering process. Now this filtering process is made up of: your beliefs, your values, your memories and your language. What happens when information passes through this, is that it is distorted, deleted and generalized.

This has to happen, because we’re getting bombarded with information, and unless we take the information through the filtering

process, there’ll be too much stimulation. So what happens once this information comes through, is we create these internal representations of it. That is, we represent it to ourselves in images and sounds in our mind. Then this combines with our physiology which is determined by the messages we’re getting from our central nervous system.

These two combine together to create our state, which could be described as your mood in the moment, and from your mood you take action.

In NLP they say all human behaviour is governed by the state you’re in at the moment. Therefore, once you have your behaviours, you get your life results, because all results are from the actions you take.

How do we create this filtering process?

It’s during our upbringing, and it’s all based during safety. If you think about a child, their first goal is to survive. The thing we generally have to survive in is our family unit when we’re growing up. Therefore, we create this internal map of reality to make sure it keeps us safe.

However, as time goes on and we get older, the problem is we are still relating from this old internal map of reality. It is no longer valid because we are now adults, and we want to express ourselves in different ways. But, if we don’t actually have a map that allows us to do that, then we can’t do it.

As we get older, we have to start outgrowing our old maps of reality, and start consciously choosing the ones we want, ones that are going to get us to the goals we want to achieve. However, this is very hard to do because a lot of it is unconscious, and we’re not even aware that we’re doing it.

Now that we know our life results are a result of our behaviours, which are a result of our state, which are a result of our internal representations, which are determined by the filtering process, what we’ve got to do is start changing the filtering process.

Eckhart Tolle, the author of The Power of Now, described awareness as the greatest agent for change. Therefore, the first step in being able to change our map to get different results is to become aware of them.

Then the second thing to do, is to start consciously choosing the different filters we want to put in place.

1)    Start meditating. You want to start becoming aware of how you’re creating your internal experiences.
